The Manager of State and Local Tax directly reports to the Director of Tax and will have primary responsibility for state and local tax matters, including compliance with applicable tax laws, the development of tax strategies, communications with state and local tax departments and external advisors, and oversight of Floor & Decor’s tax exempt/resale certificate management system. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the Controller, Director of Tax, CFO, and management of other departments to identify strategic opportunities to improve our state and local tax planning and compliance processes.
Scope of Responsibility
Review sales and use tax returns prepared by a third-party advisor for accuracy and recommend opportunities for improvement
Manage all phases of sales and use tax audits
Communicate directly with state tax auditors
Perform data analysis to minimize the Company’s sales and use tax exposure
Take corrective action as required to prevent future audit exposure or overpayments
Perform reverse audits to identify and claim potential tax refunds; suggest changes that will improve the tax accrual and payment process
Evaluate and advise on purchase and sales transactions taxes with a thorough understanding of tax laws and the business operations
Provide expert advice regarding the taxability of products and services, tax resale/exemption certification and licensing rules by jurisdiction, and other matters
Communicate with taxing jurisdictions, vendors, and internal departments regarding excise/sales/use tax questions and resolve potential liability issues
Work with the Director of Tax on decisions, determinations, and positions based on an in-depth knowledge of the company, industry trends, tax research, and changing laws to identify issues
Monitor, research, review, and communicate all pertinent sales and use tax legislation and determine the impact on the Company, and update business processes in response to tax law changes
Supervise, mentor, and train staff on state and local tax projects, and provide meaningful feedback and professional development opportunities
Must be detailed-oriented and possess strong analytical skills
Ability to research difficult state and local tax matters, summarize findings, and present recommendations to the Tax Director, Corporate Controller, CFO, and other senior management
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Self-driven and dynamic team player with strong ability to analyze, solve problems, and adapt to changing organizational and operational needs
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
Skill in organization, prioritization, and attention to detail
Experience & Education
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
5+ years of state and local tax experience
Active CPA license
Public accounting experience
Sedentary Work – Ability to exert 10 - 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
