The Director of Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting directly reports to the Corporate Controller and will have primary responsibility for financial reporting and technical accounting. The Director of Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting will work on a diverse range of areas that require critical analysis of the underlying business purpose and economics of financial transactions to determine appropriate accounting and disclosure treatment. In addition, the ideal candidate will mentor and provide meaningful feedback and professional development opportunities to staff and work collaboratively with our stores, store support center departments, senior management, and external stakeholders.
Scope of Responsibility
Directs the SEC financial reporting process for quarterly and annual financial reports, including financial statement, footnote, MD&A, and earnings release disclosures
Facilitates the completion and review of monthly and quarterly corporate accounting and close activities, including revenue, leases, debt, equity, taxes, and other areas
Researches technical accounting issues, prepares research memos, and provides expert guidance and advice to senior management and the Board of Directors for a variety of topics, including the following:
New accounting guidance issued by standard setting and regulatory agencies
Questions regarding application of the Company’s accounting policies and U.S. GAAP related to significant transactions
Revenue and costs for product and service sales, including standard in-store transactions, web sales, drop-shipping, design services, commercial contracts, and other revenue arrangements
Lease and purchase contracts for real estate, equipment, and other assets
Software development and capitalization policies and procedures
Assessment of accounting and financial reporting effects of new business initiatives
Policies and benchmarking for earnings release disclosures and non-GAAP financial measures
Assists with the coordination of external audit activities and audit preparation
Provides management teams with appropriate information to facilitate budget, forecast, and other reporting needs, and maintains forecast models for capitalized interest and interest expense, stock-based compensation, diluted weighted-average shares outstanding, and other technical areas as needed
Assists with the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal controls and accounting policies to promote effective governance and accurate financial reporting
Conducts special projects as assigned by the Corporate Controller and CFO
Answers questions from stores as well as store support center departments
In-depth knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, financial statement analysis, and internal controls
Ability to research difficult accounting topics, write position papers, and present to the Corporate Controller, CFO, Audit Committee, and internal and external auditors
Drive process improvements and develop systematic processes
Ability to analyze, solve problems, and adapt to changing organizational and operational needs
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal customers and partner with other functions to improve processes and create value
Skill in organization, prioritization, and attention to detail
Experience & Education
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and active CPA license
10+ years of progressive responsibility, including at least 4 years of management experience
Big 4 public accounting experience
Working Conditions (travel, hours, environment)
Limited travel required including air and car travel
The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet to moderate.
This role will be a hybrid role- Required 3 days a week in the office and 2 days teleworking
Sedentary Work – Ability to exert 10 - 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
